Oh man! I lived through those times. The local video store owner knew my cousin and I. We would sneak and get R rated movies all the time.

For me, it was the smell of the video store. Just like the bookstore, I love the smell. Not only did you own the VHS, but it was a status symbol if you had many!

I do wish they bring the video store back.

Awe, man, that sounds like fun! Smells definitely bring back so many memories so I can see why that's what stuck with you!

"Physical media is a form of ownership. You forever own it, even if the movie is nowhere to be found online. It won’t be lost media if you have it in your hands."

You better know it! That's why I prefer physical media for reading and viewing, and I strongly advocate for other people and institutions to have them. You only pay for it at point of sale and don't have to keep making automated recurring monthly and/or annual payments (which is really what pisses people off about the streamers, I'm sure).

Definitely! It seems like everything is a subscription now to the point it's getting crazy. One I saw that I found ridiculous was the Oura ring which can be about 500 dollars... but then you have to pay a membership on top of it to use all the features. Like huh?

I remember we used to hire our videos from a wee shop next to a petrol station, long before Blockbuster ever existed

Also got pirate copies of The Exorcist and Return of the Jedi from them as well!

My brother still has all our old videos from back in the day in his garage but no player to play them on

I now collect the special edition blu rays for all my favourite movies and keep them in my library alongside my books. They’re just as important 👍🏼

My dad has an entire DVD collection, I love it! I remember my parents used to have some VHS tapes too but I'm not sure if they still have them.

Also, I completely forgot the pirate copies! I remember when that was a big thing with bootleg video games too LOL

We just got out the old vcr and have opened the tubs and tubs of vhs. It is magical. Notabky, a rare copy of “cannibal! The musical” on vhs was a treat. A ton of old Disney vhs as well. Just so much saved.

That sounds like a goldmine! The musical definitely sounds fun too!

I have an old digitized copy on mpeg. Matt started stone and Trey Parker’s first movie. Troma! Full musical! Early seeds of south park! And if you watched the south park concert these past few years they performed a few of the songs.
