Jump Scares: Prime is Streaming a Rocking Horror That You Need to Check Out
Rock music, campy gore, and a weird twist--what else do you need?
Guess who has a little movie recommendation for you?
Amazon Prime is finally streaming The Retaliators, a horror film inspired by rock music and the iconic stars in the rock scene.
I had the pleasure to watch it when it came to select theaters last year. Not only is it a horror movie, but it had some of my favorite bands be part of it, so it was a must-see for me.
Obviously, if you’re into rock music, you’d probably enjoy the film if only to point out some of your favorites. For me, it was for Jacoby Shaddix (Papa Roach) and Spencer Charnas (Ice Nine Kills), but other legends like Tommy Lee are also seen in the movie. The soundtrack is also pretty killer, but that’s a give-in.
The film itself is centered around a pastor’s journey for revenge after his daughter is in an accident. He becomes obsessed with retribution, though soon finds out about an insane secret that he has to dismantle himself.
It’s a bloody gore fest, filled with some very on-the-nose Evil Dead references that show appreciation of the golden age of horror. There are extreme close-ups, cheesy one-liners, and some pretty neat effects.
If anything, I recommend watching the film if only for Shaddix’s performance of Quinn Brady. Brady is a sadistic serial killer, and honestly, every scene with him in it is golden.
I fully believe a Quinn Brady origin movie needs to happen. A film more grounded than The Retaliators, with a much more traditional uneasiness of following a serial killer around. I actually think it would be a pretty damn good movie.
The Retaliators movie itself is pretty damn campy. If you love cheesy 80s horror films, I think the movie captures the charm effortlessly. It’s a good movie to pop some popcorn, lay on the couch, and watch while there’s a storm brewing outside.
